A dusty and humid environment is very demanding for cranes. Normally, only one crane with a dual scoop type grab is supplied. The crane is used to distribute slag under the conveyor line to the other areas in the slag bunker 24 hours a day. Another more critical duty is loading trucks during the daytime. Sometimes the ferrous rejects have not been separated from the slag, causing higher requirements for the buckets. To achieve better penetration into the slag, the edges of claws can be provided with special teeth, or, alternatively, fully closed orange peel type grabs are used.
In advanced plants, the whole process takes place under unmanned full automation and is controlled directly from the central control room. Alternatively, loading the trucks can be done manually from the remote control station in the building or with radio control.
The same modular solutions used in Konecranes WTE cranes are applied also in Slag Handling Cranes.
