Konecranes received order for container stacking cranes to pioneering sky depot in Singapore

Corporate press releases

In April 2016, Konecranes received an order for two container stacking cranes from SH Cogent Logistics Pte Ltd in Singapore. The cranes will be used for stacking empty containers in a pioneering new container depot, located on the rooftop of Cogent One-Stop Logistics Hub, an integrated full-service logistics hub opened in 2016. The cranes will be delivered during the first quarter 2017.

Singapore is a major transhipment hub. The need for shipping lines to store empty containers is big. Cogent One-Stop Logistics Hub, one of Singapore’s largest ones, answers to this need and offers its customers operations like transportation, warehousing management and container depot management.

“With limitations in land and floor space in Singapore, there is a constant need to be more competitive, productive and yet cost-efficient,” says Mr. Tan Yeow Khoon, Executive Chairman, Cogent Holdings Ltd. “Being a major player in the warehouse logistics industry, we opted to think out of the box and chose to make use of Konecranes overhead cranes and their latest technology. We are confident that they will help us achieve our business goals.”

As Cogent now will use overhead cranes to move containers in the new container depot, less floor space is needed for vehicle maneuvers. In addition, the container depot is located in the logistics hub together with warehouses. This means that extra trips are no longer needed to move empty containers to or from the warehouses.

“This is an extremely interesting project and we are very happy to be part of it,” says T K Mak Konecranes’ General Manager, Industrial Equipment, South East Asia. “A decisive factor in this deal was that the Konecranes equipment could meet the stringent requirements of short cycle times and 24/7 operations. Another important issue was our local service office located 20 minutes away from site and our ability to offer fast and close support.”

The ordered cranes will have a lifting capacity of 12 tons, suitable for empty container handling. They will be equipped with an array of smart features that are designed to help the crane operator to handle the containers efficiently and safely. The cranes include features like TRUCONNECT® remote services enabling real-time monitoring of the cranes, smart target positioning, hoist synchronization and energy saving regenerative drive.
