The focus is to continuously improve energy and resource efficiency of our products taking the whole life cycle into consideration to achieve considerable improvements in environmental performance. We use Design for Environment (DfE) as a design approach in product development to reduce the overall environmental impact of a product where impacts are considered across its life cycle before they enter the production phase.
Generally, it is known that 70-80% of the product’s environmental impacts during its life cycle are determined already at the design phase. Therefore, taking environmental aspects into consideration early, when the product is under design, we can significantly improve the environmental performance of the product. The use phase of Konecranes products can be very long, and this is why significant environmental improvements can be achieved through smarter and more resource efficient products.
The lifecycle of a crane consists of the production of raw materials and components, manufacturing, use and maintenance, disposal of the product, and deliveries between each stage. Each stage of the lifecycle has different impacts on the environment. Based on the product and its energy intensity, the two most significant environmental impacts come from energy consumption during the use phase and the production of raw materials and components.
We use the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to communicate about the environmental aspects as it is a standardized way of quantifying a product’s environmental impact giving an overview of the relevant eco-efficient features. To increase transparency, we use a third part service provider to conduct a critical review on our claims and the data presented.
