Environmental management and climate action

Climate action and resource efficiency

We are committed to cut emissions, enhance our low-carbon portfolio and increase our climate ambition by setting Science Based Targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This means that we focus to continuously decrease emissions from scope 1, 2 and 3, meaning our own operation but also from the larger proportion of the value chain. Climate-related risks and opportunities are assessed by conducting annual company-level risk assessments, natural hazard risk evaluations, climate risk scenario analyses and local 14001 risk evaluations on top of the climate risk scenario analysis done in 2019. Read more about our detailed climate risks and opportunities. (NFI table)

In 2020 we:

  • Held climate risks and opportunities workshops about the opportunities we have mitigating climate change and to accelerate circular economy, agreed on next steps.
  • Signed the commitment letter for the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We will set new, even more ambitious climate targets for our operations in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement
  • Continued to decrease our own carbon footprint by reducing our energy and carbon emission intensity and aiming to power our factories with 100% renewable electricity by 2025.

We are committed to providing our customers with eco-efficient solutions and services while preventing and minimizing emissions. In addition, we pay special attention to the use of efficient logistics and packaging, minimizing waste and reusing and recycling as much as possible. To continuously improve our performance, we have set a target of all our manufacturing sites being ISO 14001:2015 EMS certified by the end of 2021. Currently 83% of our factories have an ISO 14001 environmental management system in place that requires continuous development and the establishment of local annual targets. Our commitments concerning environmental responsibility can be found in our Code of Conduct and in our Environmental Policy, which outlines our principles for managing the environmental impact of Konecranes sites, products and services. To help mitigate risks and drive ethical practices in our supply chains, we use our Supplier Code of Conduct as a supporting document emphasizing the corporate responsibility standards, we expect from third parties. Konecranes performs due diligence and background checks on suppliers and subcontractors before entering into business relationships.
