Konecranes Grab Bulk Unloader to the UK

Corporate press releases

The Bristol Port Company ordered a Gantry Type Grab Bulk Unloader for its Royal Portbury Dock in Bristol, UK. Typically these cranes sell for EUR 5.5-7.0 million. Delivery is due in June 2005.

The Port of Bristol is a major deep-water port designed to accept routinely Cape size vessels of up to 130,000 tonnes dead weight (DWT) at the Avonmouth and Royal Portbury Docks. The Port of Bristol has ordered a Grab Unloader to increase ship-discharging capacity at Portbury Dock. The main use will be unloading of coal and animal feed. The Port of Bristol is seeing strong growth in this area.

Portbury Dock is recognised as one of the most environmentally advanced multi-cargo bulk terminals in Europe. The Grab Unloader boasts operational and environmental advantages for fast and safe throughput at the terminal: high capacity, a modern yet proven design. Dedicated support functions are readily available. The Unloader has a lifting capacity of 28 tons and an unloading capacity of 1200 tons per hour. It features Konecranes' AGD (Advanced Grab Drive) control system, which represents the latest technology in Grab Unloaders. The AGD Control System offers a wide range of operation modes, especially suitable for efficient elimination of dust. The first Unloader with AGD control system was delivered to the Port of Pori in Finland in 1999.

“The advanced control system really won the order for us. The system makes the crane easy to manoeuvre and service. With a comprehensive dust extraction system the Grab Unloader is consistent with the high environmental protection standard of the terminal as a whole. Pollution impression features are becoming increasingly more important in material handling equipment ”, says Kimmo Nyman, Director, Bulk Handling Cranes, Konecranes VLC Corporation.

The Port of Bristol has been a customer of KCI for more than ten years. Ship-discharging equipment at Portbury includes two Konecranes Continuous Ship Unloaders (CSU) delivered in 1993, with a peak capacity of over 2,000 tons per hour each (CSUs minimise dust and spillage). Bristol’s ship-to-shore equipment also includes a Konecranes container crane delivered in 2000.
