Cask Handling Cranes

While casks have been an essential part of the nuclear industry’s transportation of radioactive materials for decades, that role has significantly expanded in recent years, particularly with respect to the storage of spent fuel for plant sites around the world. Spent fuel transportation has long been established as an important part of the industrial activities in the backend of the nuclear fuel cycle, especially for the reprocessing industry.
Konecranes Cask handling cranes are specialized cranes which utilizes the latest generation of single-failure-proof technology to move nuclear spent fuel safely and efficiently. We understand the complexity of nuclear cask handling, and the importance of coordinating precision operation, safety, and reliability.

Cask Transporters

Spent fuel from a nuclear power reactor emits high levels of both radiation and heat, and so is stored in water pools adjacent to the reactor to allow the initial heat and radiation levels to decrease. Typically, used fuel is stored onsite for at least five months before it can be transported, although it may be stored there long-term.
Konecranes spent fuel nuclear cask transporters are designed to handle most nuclear dry storage casks safely and efficiently. We provide high level of safety with load drop protection, ergonomic controls to simplify operation, small turning radius with full rotational capability for efficient transportation and easy installation. Our transporters are available in both rubber tire and track-driven designs capable of handling up to 350 tons.

Nuclear Polar Cranes

Polar cranes are used for fuel assembly purposes and reactor head removal and replacement. Used to handle multipurpose lifting needs, polar cranes are comprised of a main hoist, auxiliary hoist, maintenance jib crane, and containment inspection man lift. These cranes can perform various maintenance and operational duties while ensuring optimal quality and safety. Polar cranes operate on a circular runway located near the spring line of the containment/reactor building. These cranes are primarily used to removal and replacement of the reactor head, as well as during the refuelling outages.
Konecranes polar cranes is designed for multipurpose usage that maximizes operational capability by combining numerous lifting features into a single compact and weight-efficient trolley. The design improves productivity and reliability by providing four primary lifting systems:

  • Main Hoist and Auxiliary Hoist - Perform typical plant maintenance and operational functions
  • Maintenance jib crane - Provide lifting capability during maintenance operations
  • Containment inspection man lift - Inspecting and maintaining the containment dome
