If intermodal is about making material flow in a trackable, safe way through inland logistics, then Konecranes offers the tools to do it. The tool can be relatively simple, like a reach stacker. Or it can be sophisticated, like an RMG crane with automation. If the flow extends to warehousing the tools can be overhead cranes or software for controlling warehouse processes. No company offers more for intermodal than Konecranes. KEEP YOUR INTERMODAL IN MOTION.
Intermodal supply chain is advancing strongly due to transport shift from road to rail. Specifically in Europe the challenges of vicinity at urban areas, emissions, space for trailers drive for change. EU supports more sustainable freight transport within Europe and striving European-wide harmonization of the use of the means of transport. The traffic by transport truck on the road is to be reduced and instead a stronger use of the environmentally friendly modes of transport rail and waterway is to be promoted. This strategy is intended to reduce the high CO2 emissions of road freight transport.
Intermodal freight is transported in containers that move between different modes of transportation - road, rail, river, sea and even air - without any unpacking. With 95% of manufactured goods worldwide traveling in containers, intermodal is becoming increasingly popular with terminal operators and carriers, as it offers many commercial advantages that a single mode does not.
A container terminal is a complex and expensive investment, although the work it will do is quite simple: bringing in steel boxes (containers) and taking them out. It must be designed very carefully, starting with your business goals and moving forward from there.
The main things you need to consider when planning a new container terminal or the expansion of a terminal. It covers container handling equipment, the role of technology and carbon emissions.
WHAT IS THE CORE OF LIFTING?
The Core of Lifting is an integrated package of gears, motor and controls, designed by Konecranes in-house specifically for cranes and lifting motions. We also design the interaction between the key components and the software, as a whole, specifically for lifting.
