Hydro Power

Hydro power plants use dams to produce hydroelectricity by impounding a reservoir of water and then releasing it through one or more water turbines. The turbines are connected to generators that generate electricity from the energy provided by the difference in the water level upstream and downstream.

We offer hydro power station cranes with lifting capabilities up to 1000 tons and down to 1 to 80 tons for maintenance and workshop use.

Spillway gate gantry crane

An upper spillway gate crane lifts gates and in some applications also cleans debris in front of the gate. It also serves as a maintenance crane for equipment on the dam.

Turbine hall crane

The turbine bridge crane is used to mount the turbine and other powerhouse equipment and is also used for maintenance.

Spillway gate gantry crane

The lower spillway gate crane lifts gates.

Other applications include:

  • Draft tube gantry crane
  • Maintenance shop hoists and jibs
  • Maintenance hoists
  • Intake gate gantry crane
  • Wind mill hoist

Thermal Power

In a thermal power plant, either coal or oil is used to heat a boiler to convert water into steam. The steam is used to turn a turbine, which is connected to a generator. When the turbine turns, electricity is generated and given as output by the generator, and is then supplied to consumers through high-voltage power lines.

Some thermal plants also use natural gas to turn the turbine. The gas is ignited and burned and the heat creates pressure that turns the turbine.

Konecranes provides cranes for all kinds of thermal power plants, such as turbine hall cranes, boiler room cranes and hoists, and maintenance and workshop cranes and hoists.

Wind Power

Wind turbines are used to generate electricity in areas with strong, steady winds – either on land or offshore. Almost all modern turbines being produced today use a three-bladed, upwind design. Wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft. The shaft connects to a generator, which produces electricity.

Electric chain hoists are used to carry out maintenance work on windmill machinery and for lifting spare parts. The hoist can be mounted to a jib crane within the nacelle of the turbine. Using the hoist for service allows maintenance staff to safely raise and lower turbine appliances for repair or replacement through the hub, as opposed to accessing the nacelle through the hatch or along the tower.

Workshop cranes can be used in the process of manufacturing windmills. These cranes include wall console cranes, bridge cranes, jib cranes and manual hoists.
