For decades, Konecranes has contributed to the productivity of the paper and forest industry. Whether you’re lifting raw pulp into treatment vats, or taking finished parent rolls off the main production line we offer cranes and services designed to help you work more safely and effectively.
A woodyard crane handles the unloading and storing of logs at a pulp mill as well as the feeding of this material into the mill. The wood must be prepared for processing through sorting according to specifications on species, cleanliness and dimensions; organizing so that the mill can maintain a constant feed rate; and collecting reject material for disposal. If the raw logs or pieces of wood are not yet ready for pulping, the mill may also have to convert it into material suitable for pulping in processes such as debarking, sawing, chipping, and screening.
A Konecranes woodyard crane easily handles the unloading, storing and feeding of logs in a pulp mill. Designed to operate in all weather conditions, even high winds, these cranes minimize wood losses while minimizing energy, maintenance and labor costs. With three flexible, high-performance designs – the straight track portal, rotating portal and log boom – we can offer an ideal solution for every woodyard.
Working closely with leading pulp and paper companies, we have developed features to improve the handling of logs.
This crane is ideal when thinking ahead to future runway expansions and increases in storage space. It offers easy adjustment to truck traffic flow and optimized storage.

A parent roll handling crane, also known as a dry end crane or winder crane, lifts the rolls of paper produced in a paper mill from the winding station. First, the paper needs to be dried, then passed through calendars to form its thickness, after which it is put on a storage rack, or placed on a transfer car for delivery to another part of the plant for coating or cutting. The empty spool shafts go back to the paper machine winder’s storage rails. Typically, there are one or two roll changes per hour.
A Konecranes parent roll handling crane is dimensioned for handling all process machine output in a standard paper mill. It is designed for accurate movements, needed when lifting heavy rolls around high-speed machines. Made for safety and durability, its electrics are protected from the potentially corrosive, warm and wet environment in which it operates. Larger roll cranes can have multiple purposes across plant processes, including maintenance.

After completion of production process, the paper rolls are placed mechanically upright. A vacuum paper roll lifter crane is then positioned on top of the paper roll and the vacuum is activated producing an airtight sealed paper surface, making the roll ready for handling. The suction pad needs to be placed on top of the paper reel, which means the reels can be placed closely together, maximising storage.
A Konecranes vacuum lifter crane is a versatile, reliable, ergonomic crane for safe and fully automatic paper roll handling. The Konecranes vacuum lifter crane is designed for safer, fully automatic paper roll handling, and it includes many functions such as high handling rates, gentle gripping action, and handling wide variety of fine paper grades and roll sizes.

Our vacuum lifter will really make a difference to your paper storage
A mechanical gripper crane lifts paper rolls at a paper mill, takes them to storage, where they are usually kept vertically in stacks, and puts them into place for shipping. Handling paper rolls is a critical task in paper production, so they require smooth and efficient travel. A gripper crane is particularly useful when preparing for sea transport, as packing to prevent damage from the movement of a cargo vessel means that paper rolls cannot be lifted by vacuum technology.
A Konecranes mechanical gripper crane has a gentle grip with six evenly distributed friction pads to minimize roll deformation, and guiding slides to protect rolls from accidental contact with the pads. It uses the latest technology, including smart sensors and other intelligent features, to protect paper rolls from damage during lifting. Crane design improves the use of space in paper storage area and makes retrieval more efficient.

One of our primary objectives is to reduce the amount of equipment in your process by developing more efficient and less costly ways of using your equipment
The forming section constitutes what is called the wet end of the machine. Wood pulp gets pumped from the machine box through screens and cleaners to the head box, which delivers a uniform slurry to the forming wire. The wet end crane helps to erect the paper machine, handle heavy press rolls and machine parts, and support maintenance tasks.
The Konecranes wet end crane can be fully automated or operated manually from a central control room. Made for safety and durability, it is protected from the potentially corrosive, warm and wet environment in which it operates. The versatile crane is easy to adapt for different uses and locations around the plant, such as the coater section, deinking plant, roll grinding workshop, or any other place where a crane is needed.
Our deep understanding of the paper and forest industry allows us to offer you just the right solutions and product features
