KCI Konecranes wins large order for RTG-cranes from the U.S.

Corporate press releases

KCI Konecranes has received one of its largest individual orders for Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes from APM Terminals, a global leader in container terminal operations. A total of 18 new RTG-cranes have been ordered for delivery in the first quarter of 2007. The value of the order is not disclosed.

“This order further extends the solid relationship between APM Terminals and KCI Konecranes”, says Tuomas Saastamoinen, Sales Manager, Container Handling. “APM Terminals already operates a substantial number of our RTGs at its terminals.”

To date KCI Konecranes has delivered 57 RTGs to APM Terminals on the U.S. East, West and Gulf Coasts. KCI Konecranes cooperates with APM Terminals through their terminals in Elizabeth, New Jersey; Norfolk, Virginia; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California and Tacoma, Washington. The recent order also includes RTGs for APM Terminals’ Oakland, California terminal.

With high productivity, low maintenance costs, competitive fuel economy, low emissions and high reliability, the Konecranes RTG has established itself globally as the state-of-the-art RTG-crane.

“We were the first to launch a completely electromechanical RTG back in 1995 and today already in its third generation the Konecranes RTG boasts impressive performance and up-time statistics”, Saastamoinen adds. “We have now developed a solid presence in the U.S. RTG-market through the many repeat orders from existing customers and their testimonials have been extremely helpful when promoting our RTGs to new customers.”

The 16-wheel all-electric RTGs have a lifting capacity of 50 tons and are capable of stacking containers one-over-five high and six plus truck lane wide. The manufacturing of the new cranes will take place in both Europe and China. The RTGs are fully equipped with modern technical features including DGPS autosteering, remote diagnostics, sway prevention and horizontal fine positioning systems. Handling efficiency is achieved by high hoist, trolley and gantry speeds. KCI Konecranes’ own AC Frequency Control System comprises the most reliable drive for the RTGs. All features are electromechanical, with no hydraulics involved.
