Konecranes VLC Corporation has received an order for a Ship-to-Shore (STS) container crane to be delivered to Muuga Container Terminal, Port of Tallinn, Estonia. The crane will be delivered in spring 2004.
The order was placed by AS Hansa Liising Eesti who will lease the crane to Muuga Container Terminal. Muuga also awarded us a maintenance contract for the crane. Technical support will be provided for locally through our service branch in Estonia specialised in maintenance of container handling equipment.
The crane has an outreach of 36 m enabling it to handle containers for Panamax size vessels. The crane has a lifting capacity of 40 ton, a hoisting speed of 60/120 m/min and the trolley speed is 150 m/min.
Having used primarily mobile harbour cranes until now, the Konecranes Ship-to-Shore crane will boost productivity in the Muuga terminal’s operations. This crane will secure container handling capabilities for the port as the container traffic increases.
KCI Konecranes is the market leader for Ship-to-Shore container cranes in the Baltic Sea market. Konecranes has delivered most of the Ship-to-Shore cranes to Baltic Sea harbours since the early 70’s.
"In making the decision to invest in Konecranes STS cranes, we visited several terminals and factories in Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Finland, and Italy to see similar cranes in operation and learn the conditions of manufacturing these cranes. We were impressed with Konecranes’ technical solutions, including crane design, details of the main structure, construction of the brakes, AC drives, economical electrical motors etc. Also, of great importance to us, was the availability of service from the local branch and Konecranes expertise in different areas such as weather conditions in our region and its possible effects on the crane. All of the above helped us make the decision in favour of Konecranes" said Sergei Artjomov, Chairman of the Board of the Muuga Container Terminal. "The STS crane will not only help us move more cargo faster than before, but it will improve customer service and security and allow Muuga CT to continue growing faster than any container port in Baltic region"
According to Mika Mahlberg, Director, Container Cranes, this order demonstrates the correctness of our approach to combine our high performance container crane offering with a local service presence.
Port of Tallinn is actually a four-member port family on the northern coast of Estonia, of which the latest addition is the Muuga Container terminal, which also happens to be the biggest container terminal in Estonia. It is also one the most modern ports in this part of the world. Being perfectly positioned to take advantage of the increased trade flows between the east and west the harbour is experiencing growth in its activities and a remarkable proportion of investments of the Port of Tallinn is planned for Muuga Harbour. At present Muuga handles about 70% of the total cargo traffic of the Port of Tallinn and almost 90% of the transit traffic going through Estonia.
Konecranes VLC has delivered similar STS cranes to this region during the last four years, among others to the ports of Oulu (Finland), Gdynia (Poland), St Petersburg (Russia) and Kotka (Finland).
