Powering efficiency and sustainability

Hamburger Hungaria, a subsidiary of the Prinzhorn Group, operates a modern paper mill in Hungary with a strong focus on sustainability. Its waste paper-based production model eliminates the need for landfill disposal by transforming recovered paper into high-value recycled containerboard. The facility also meets its own energy demands by converting production by-products into energy, supported by a modern power plant that ensures a continuous and sustainable energy supply.

Comprehensive crane solutions

A fleet of Konecranes lifting equipment plays a key role in Hamburger Hungaria’s operations, supporting both paper production and waste-to-energy processes. These cranes ensure efficient material handling, which is essential for smooth mill operations.

Precision handling in paper production

  • Dry end cranes: Featuring two SM Process winches with a 50-ton working load each, a 5-ton auxiliary hoist, and a 100-ton bridge load, these cranes handle roll transport at the winder, where jumbo rolls made from 100% recycled paper are cut and sleeved.
  • Wet end crane: Equipped with an 85-ton winch and a 100-ton bridge load, this crane is primarily used for paper machine maintenance and as a backup for dry end cranes.
  • Paper roll storage cranes: Featuring vacuum lifters and an integrated warehouse management system, these cranes optimize roll storage and retrieval

Customer trust and long-term partnership

For more than 25 years, Hamburger Hungaria has worked closely with Konecranes, building a strong and reliable partnership.

“When we needed cranes for our new waste utilization facility, Konecranes was the clear choice. The project was executed smoothly, and we received strong collaboration, quick troubleshooting, and dependable performance,” says Daniel Panyi, Project Manager at Hamburger Hungaria Kft

Automated waste handling for energy production

At its waste-to-energy facility, Hamburger Hungaria relies on Konecranes’ automated waste-handling cranes to convert waste into fuel.

Heavy-duty waste cranes: Two fully automated GL heavy-duty cranes, each with a 12-ton capacity and a 24.5-meter span, are equipped with 8m³ orange peel grabs. Their key functions include:

  • Feeding hoppers with fuel
  • Stacking waste for efficient storage
  • Mixing fuel to maintain consistency

These cranes operate autonomously but can be manually controlled via a remote operating station (ROS) or service radio if needed. The remote system allows operators to manage crane functions from a safe, ergonomic control center, reducing exposure to hazardous environments and improving safety. Automation and regenerative braking enhance operational efficiency while conserving energy. Advanced Smart Features such as sway control, slack rope prevention, and shock load prevention help ensure secure and efficient material handling. Additionally, TRUCONNECT® remote monitoring provides real-time performance data for predictive maintenance, minimizing downtime.

“Customers like Hamburger Hungaria don’t just need an equipment provider—they seek a partner who understands their vision and delivers solutions to achieve it. At Konecranes, we have the experience and process knowledge to make that happen,” says Markus Scheibelberger, Director of Product Sales, EMEA, Konecranes
