One terminal in Dominican Republic had the Konecranes Stack Collision Prevention System and electronic anti-sway system (EAS) retrofitted on 18 non-Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to help operators lift, lower and place containers more safely and accurately. Now their Konecranes and non-Konecranes RTGs both operate at the same high level of safety.
This terminal was impressed with the safety and precision of the Stack Collision Prevention feature on their four Konecranes RTGs, they decided to retrofit their 18 non-Konecranes RTGs with the same feature to ensure a consistently high level of safety across the entire fleet.
Part of the Konecranes Any Brand series, the Stack Collision Prevention retrofit is fully compatible with non-Konecranes RTGs. It uses two laser scanners to constantly check the running bay when the trolley is in motion. The trolley slows down if an object is detected in its path, greatly reducing the chances of bumping into any nearby containers, tipping containers over, or damaging the load or the crane.
As Stack Collision Prevention slows down trolley movement, an anti-sway system can fine tune the speed to stabilize the load and ensure a continuously smooth motion. Since the non-Konecranes RTGs at their terminal did not have an anti-sway feature, Konecranes retrofitted them with the Konecranes EAS as well.
The goal with every retrofit is to make the handling, functionality and reliability of existing cranes equivalent to the latest generation of Konecranes equipment. Even on machines that were not originally manufactured by Konecranes, a retrofit can add features to improve operational efficiency and safety. The Stack Collision Prevention retrofit is a simple, cost-effective way to improve safety on any RTG.

The Konecranes Stack Collision Prevention retrofit prevents container collisions and knock-downs as the trolley moves towards the bay. The system can detect both 20-foot and 40-foot containers in the same bay, avoiding unsafe loading in mixed bays. It works with both loaded and empty spreaders, and allows for fine positioning even in bad weather and around stacks of uneven height. As an extra safeguard, the two laser scanners operate independently.
