Features of eco portfolio technologies
Konecranes is driving the transition to low emission, high efficiency solutions. Our lifecycle assessments show a clear advantage: electric Konecranes equipment can significantly cut emissions compared to diesel-powered machines. Our portfolio offers a variety of low-emission power options including hybrid and full-electric options, resource and energy efficiency features such as regenerative braking, as well as maintenance, upgrades and modernizations that help improve equipment performance and safety. In the case of power trains, we focus on operational efficiency without compromising equipment performance.
As an example, all of our fully electric equipment deliver zero tailpipe emissions during their operation and lower energy use compared to earlier generations, while their durable, robust construction doubles crane service life in container operations.
In our hybrid power systems, braking energy is recuperated to the battery, and the diesel generator is used to recharge the battery only when needed. Therefore, a significantly smaller diesel generator and fuel consumption fulfills the energy needs of the crane. Learn more: Hybrid Power Pack for RTGs
For diesel-powered equipment, we offer advanced fuel saving innovations like the Konecranes “Fuel Saver” for lift trucks, a variable speed generator that can reduce fuel consumption by up to 35% compared to conventional systems. Learn more: Flow Drive for Lift Trucks. And for customers ready to take an immediate step toward cleaner operations, Konecranes diesel equipment is compatible with HVO100, a renewable, fossil-free fuel that can cut fossil-based CO₂ emissions by up to 90%. With these technologies, Konecranes helps customers reduce emissions and lower energy costs. Learn more: The path to ecolifting.
New solutions to be more sustainable than the previous generation
We utilize the Konecranes Design for Environment concept in product development guiding the design for energy efficiency, better material selection as well as to durability and maintainability. We also strengthen our teams’ knowledge about environmentally conscious design by providing various trainings and tools.
In Port Solutions, the focus is on introducing new electrified and hybrid models. In Industrial Equipment focus is on improving product energy efficiency as well as harmonizing technology platforms. Our customers benefit, for example, from standby power reduction possibilities and from equipment with regenerative power, as well as motor development with optimized material use and efficiency.
Increasing the use of low-emission steel
We are committed to increasingly use low-emission steel in our products. We have launched a low-emission steel option for an overhead crane box girder for selected European markets. By choosing this option, our customers can reduce their value chain carbon footprint related to girder material emissions by 70% and for a full crane by 40% (based on a cradle-to-gate lifecycle assessment for a specific overhead crane). In addition, we are increasing the use of low-emission steel in our Core of Lifting – the package of key components of gears, motors and controls around which our cranes are built - starting with gear wheels and shafts. We actively engage in a dialogue with steel raw material suppliers regarding their maturity in climate-related topics and their capability to provide emissions calculations and set ambitious climate targets.
