Working to decarbonize our own operations

We are continuously working to improve the energy efficiency and decarbonizations of our operations. We are advancing the electrification of our vehicle fleet which is one single biggest impact activity. We have been successfully downsizing part of the fleet and pay attention to service work planning to optimize the travelling.

Energy efficiency in our manufacturing is enhanced through measures such as factory modernizations, machine upgrades, improved ventilation and insulation, and the use of heat recovery technologies. We also train employees on energy saving practices to support continuous improvement. Since 2022, all electricity used in our factories has come from renewable sources. Since 2024 we have been expanding the use of renewable energy by switching to renewable district heating in Finland, implementing geothermal heating in Sweden and switching to HVO in lift trucks.

Environmental management driven by HSE Excellence

The environmental management in Konecranes’ operations is driven by the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Excellence program. Within the program, we define our minimum requirements for environmental management, implement rules for environmental behavior and certify our operations with a third-party audited ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

In 2025 97 percent of company’s factories had an ISO 14001 certificate. As part of the ISO 14001 certificate, each factory is responsible for evaluating, prioritizing, and mitigating their environmental risks at a local level and for ensuring continuous improvements.

Our Planet-Saving Behaviors themed underResource efficiency and Energy efficiency, define what specific behaviors we expect from all our employees and partners working for us. Konecranes’ Global HSE standards set the minimum requirements and standardize our ways of working by defining common rules for all operations regarding energy, chemical handling, and waste management.  Environmental incidents are reported through our global HSE reporting tool, and investigations of the root causes and corrective actions are conducted accordingly.

Konecranes continues to apply the HSE Standards in its own operations, including those covering waste and resource management. The HSE standards also give clear instructions to ensure residual waste and hazardous waste are disposed according to local requirements and through licensed waste management companies. Konecranes aims to zero waste to landfill and targets to reduce share of landfill waste to less than 2.5 % by 2030 in manufacturing operations, taking local condition into account. Similarly waste prevention remains a priority.  We follow our progress against waste data on a quarterly basis, including the treatment method.

In addition to HSE Excellence we apply lean principles to reduce non-valuable resource consumption in our processes.

Our impacts on nature

Based on our assessment, Konecranes’ own operations’ biggest impact on biodiversity is related to climate change through emissions. For more information on the biodiversity assessment, please see our Sustainability statement 2025.

We continue to strengthen our understanding of our biodiversity impacts in the value chain.

Mitigating risks related to water use

We consider water consumption in our manufacturing not significant since our processes use very little or no water. However, we acknowledge water stress as a global problem, further intensified by climate change in certain regions. In the coming years, we will continue strengthening our understanding of the water impacts in our supply chain. We collect water consumption data quarterly from our manufacturing units. Based on WWF Water Risk Tool Konecranes has no factories in “Very High” physical water risk areas. From 34 assessed locations three (9 percent of all locations) are located in high physical water risk areas. For further information on water and marine resources please see our Sustainability statement 2025.
