We deliver safe and secure material handling solutions

Safety and security are fundamental to how we operate. We work to ensure everyone gets home safely every day, integrating safety into all parts of our business, from manufacturing and maintenance to office and remote work and extending across our value chain with the help of our products, solutions and services, our customers not only enhance safety and security but also improve the efficiency and productivity of their operations.

Konecranes has systematic approaches to the different aspects of safety and security. For example, safety and security are embedded into the design requirements and product development processes, and we have systematic, certified management systems.

Providing solutions for safe, uninterrupted and secure material handling

We provide our customers with services, equipment and solutions that help them work safely and increase the usability of their equipment and the efficiency of their operations. We manage product and cybersecurity systematically and protect our information assets. As there are considerable inherent occupational health and safety risks in industrial material handling, we want to provide solutions that make our customers’ operations more efficient, more secure, and safer. Our offering includes technologically advanced equipment with innovative features enhancing safety, as well as efficient preventive and predictive maintenance that enables our customers to keep the equipment in good working order throughout its lifespan.

We continuously improve our product safety and related processes. The actions include internal audits, trainings, management and implementation of the quality improvement process, and instructions. We want to provide unrivalled safety, quality, reliability and security, therefore we systematically identify the relevant requirements and incorporate them in our product development and testing processes. Our product compliance management ensures that our products comply with safety, environmental and cybersecurity regulations, among others. Internal guidelines, processes and instructions ensure that our products meet the needed safety requirements, achieved through design, verification, functional testing, documentation and trainings. For example, to implement safety-related control functions, our requirements meet both our own and industry standards. Konecranes’ reliability and testing approach follows ISO 17025 and covers the product lifecycle from research to product use phase.

In the product security area, Konecranes builds cybersecurity into every connected product and digital component we deliver. Our approach follows internationally recognized best‑practice frameworks, including IEC 62443 for industrial automation and control systems, and integrates secure design and development lifecycle security processes. We work closely with our global product teams to ensure that security is maintained from design to deployment, helping our customers operate safely and sustainably in an increasingly connected world. Prior to launch, our products undergo rigorous testing in our Reliability Centers and are verified and validated at key stages of development. During production and commissioning, predefined inspections ensure every product meets safety and quality requirements. Failsafe design and intelligent machine self analytics further support safe operation over time. We continuously monitor final inspection results to reduce recurring defects.

Product safety is managed through our Accident Investigation Reporting (AIR) process, where technical experts investigate equipment related incidents. We encourage customers to report any safety related events so we can take corrective actions, enable continuous safety improvement and prevent recurrence.

Konecranes’ digital ecosystem includes our customer portal for maintenance information, the Konecranes STORE for spare parts, global enterprise platforms and productivity-enhancing apps. Our comprehensive and systematic approach to crane maintenance is based on managing customers’ assets with the help of digital solutions. We connect data, machines and people to improve the safety and productivity of our customers’ operations, helping reduce the likelihood of failures that result in unplanned downtime or pose a safety risk.

Our cranes can be equipped with a wide variety of safety enhancing features. Sway Control, Hook Centering and Snag Prevention limit unwanted movements of the load during lifting or moving, or if the load or hook gets caught on something. Inching and Microspeed allow the operator to control load speeds efficiently and safely especially in the beginning and end of a lift. Features such as Assisted Load Turning, Target Positioning and End Positioning help improve the safety and precision of load manipulation. In lift trucks, geofencing features can limit load handling device movements in outdoor areas that might cause risks to people or property. With our Live Channel, we can showcase our crane safety features to customers in real time in an online virtual environment.

Konecranes manages information security, cybersecurity and privacy through ISO/IEC 27001-certified Information Security Management System with a systematic and risk-based approach towards managing Cybersecurity risks. Konecranes Information Security Management System is implemented globally, with the following scope:  “The development and operations of Konecranes business applications, IT infrastructure and customer portals, productivity-enhancing mobile applications, and the TRUCONNECT® suite of remote service products and applications, as well as advanced operational applications for manufacturing and process industries, ports and terminals—supporting automated and manual container handling, real-time equipment monitoring, predictive maintenance, and integrated logistics workflows.”

Konecranes’ information security incident management process defines how to handle information security incidents. Konecranes has a security monitoring and incident detection solution monitoring our technology environment. Processes are in place for vulnerability management, malware protection and information system audits. Konecranes’ Information Technology unit and information technology suppliers also follow incident, problem and change management processes to ensure the availability, stability and security of the information technology environment. In 2025, Konecranes had one security incident which required advanced investigation. The case had no material impact on Konecranes’ information or continuity.

Ensuring uncompromised safety in our own operations and supply chain

At Konecranes, safety is part of our DNA. Our goal is simple: everyone goes home safe, every day. This commitment applies to our own employees and extends far beyond our company’s boundaries — covering our product offering, suppliers, subcontractors, everyone who engages with our products, and everyone we work with. We believe that there is no job so urgent or service so important that we cannot take the time to perform our work safely and correctly.

Safety is built into everything we do

We are committed not only to meeting legal and regulatory requirements but often exceeding them. We lead and drive health and safety through our Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Excellence program that focuses on three areas: Life-Saving Behaviors, Global HSE standards, and Certified Management Systems. Life-Saving Behaviors are behavioral requirements addressing the main risks in our operations, whether on our own premises, on the road, or at customer sites that we expect everyone to follow. Konecranes’ Global HSE Standards define what procedures, practices and actions we expect from our operations to ensure a safe workplace.

Our Safety culture is built on accountability and learning

At Konecranes, safety is everyone’s responsibility. We aim to create and maintain a culture where everyone takes responsibility for health and safety and embraces the mindset “If you see it, you own it”. We expect everyone to challenge unsafe conditions or behaviors, take action to remove hazards, and report deviations through our HSE reporting tool to ensure proper corrective measures to be taken. We fully support the right to Pause the Job when work cannot be performed safely.

Learning is at the core of our safety culture. We acknowledge that mistakes can happen, and we learn from all of them — including those that do not result in injury. We focus on influencing both individual behavior and the systems and context that drive behaviors, encouraging open dialogue and creating a safe space for raising concerns and development ideas.

Training is one of the cornerstones of our safety culture. We offer nearly 100 safety-related course options, ranging from mandatory role-based and task-specific training to general safety introductions — all available during working hours. The more general introductory safety-related courses are targeted at all Konecranes employees regardless of their location, position, or brand. The most significant health and safety risks in our own activities are related to factory work, vehicle incidents, crane and equipment installation, and our service business, where the working conditions of our technicians vary from job to job. More detailed, role-based training requirements are defined locally based on risk assessment, laws, and compliance obligations.

By providing the necessary training, we aim to ensure that people are competent to do their work correctly and safely and have all the formal qualifications and certifications. This includes the skills needed and knowledge about the procedures, risk assessment, and emergency recovery. Assessing and mitigating workplace health and safety risks in the daily work is a legal obligation in most countries we operate, and these are done locally. Furthermore, before starting any work at a site, we conduct hazard mapping and ensure all necessary controls are in place using our global Point-of-Work Risk Assessment (PoWRA) tool.

Preventing serious injuries and fatalities

Our Serious Injury or Fatality (SIF) Exposure program helps us identify and prevent the most serious risks in our operations. This program focuses on activities to prevent incidents that caused, or had potential to cause, serious injury. We classify actual and potential SIF Exposures based on the causes to better understand which hazards are the most common and to target our actions accordingly.

Each incident with SIF Exposure is reviewed thoroughly by the management to ensure that root causes have been identified and the corrective actions are effective. The learnings from these cases, and actions taken, are shared across the organization to make sure that similar incidents are prevented from reoccurring elsewhere.

All incident data, including SIF exposure, near-misses, and observations are captured through our management systems, including the HSE reporting tool, the AIR product compliance system, and our customer feedback channels. Our HSE reporting tool allows us to track the quality of incident and observation investigations and the completion of corrective actions, including the classifications and categories.
