5G networks have transformed wireless connections – but not only for smartphones.
With the right setup, private 5G enables the remote operation of yard cranes in real time, supporting continuous video, precise positioning and low-latency controls. All this is required to place a 40-ton container with centimeter-level accuracy, even in strong sea gusts.
The majority of existing RTG crane fleets were delivered before these requirements became standard – so upgrading connectivity is the key to unlocking remote operation.
Now even the older diesel-fueled RTGs can be retrofitted for remote operation, equipping them with today’s leading technologies such as lidar and camera-based sensors, computer vision, and integrated control systems.
Remote operation can improve productivity and safety by enabling an operator to switch between cranes quickly from a remote operations room.
Previously, moving between crane cabs could take the operator up to 15 minutes; With remote operation, switching can take around 15 seconds – helping reduce idle time while keeping people out of the cab environment.
With built-in automation assistants, remote operation also tends to be gentler and more precise than humans on their own, resulting in smoother movements, reduced wear on equipment, and longer maintenance intervals.
