Overhead cranes handle steel coils at UISC

15 Konecranes overhead cranes support steel coil handling at United Iron & Steel Company’s (UISC) Abu Dhabi facility, from raw material intake to finished coils ready for dispatch. Some coils weigh up to 50 tonnes, and their coated surfaces are sensitive to scratches and impacts, making precise and reliable handling essential.

UISC is one of the leading producers of galvanized and pre-painted steel coils in the UAE and wider GCC region, producing up to 250,000 tonnes of cut sheet products and 150,000 tonnes of pre-painted galvanized steel coils annually. The crane fleet consists of 14 double-girder cranes and one single-girder crane, with lifting capacities ranging from 10 to 50 tonnes. Operated by radio remote control, the cranes support unloading, transferring and positioning activities across the facility.

"The accuracy of crane movements helps us maintain strict safety standards while preventing material damage and operator injuries,”
Souheil Hatoum, Partner & CEO of United Iron & Steel Company.

Meeting demanding application requirements

While most cranes at UISC support steel coil handling, one application required a specialized solution for handling molten metal pots in high-temperature conditions. To meet this requirement, Konecranes supplied a 10-ton double girder overhead crane with an extended-hook trolley, designed to operate in ambient temperatures of up to 55°C. The crane is equipped with stainless steel electrical panels, a stainless steel hook block cover and IP66-rated motors to withstand the demanding operating environment.

The hook is positioned one meter away from the girder to help protect the hoist from radiant heat while providing additional clearance during lifting operations. The project also required a solution that could work within the limitations of the existing building structure. Wheel load restrictions meant that the crane design needed to meet the customer’s lifting requirements without major modifications to the facility. Konecranes addressed this by supplying cranes with reduced wheel loads while maintaining the required performance.

“The customer had specific requirements for both the pot handling application and the existing building structure. We worked closely with our engineering team to develop a crane solution that met those requirements.” says Sandeep Vallabhan, Sales Manager, Konecranes.

Supporting reliable operations

In addition to the crane equipment, UISC has an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) with Konecranes to support crane availability and ongoing performance.

Pradeep Kumar Khandelwal, Engineering Head at UISC, credits the AMC with keeping the fleet running  smoothly: “Konecranes AMC support has been excellent, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Hatoum ties that reliability to the business outcome: “Konecranes solutions have improved operational efficiency while helping reduce downtime and maintenance costs over time. That translates directly into better profitability for us. The Konecranes team has also been proactive in identifying opportunities for improvement, reinforcing our long-term partnership.”
