One container terminal in US wanted to improve safety on and around their container handling equipment. So they decided to install the Konecranes fire suppression retrofit, a non-toxic, non-pressurized aerosol system that automatically detects and extinguishes critical area fires, on 11 STS cranes and 12 RTGs.
The terminal has been in operation for almost 30 years and handles some 2M TEU every year with an extensive fleet of harbor equipment. One of the priorities of their upgrade and modernization program is to improve crane safety. Although they don’t currently have any Konecranes equipment on-site, they felt that the Konecranes fire suppression retrofit would be an excellent choice for their cranes.
Part of the Konecranes Any Brand series, the retrofit is fully compatible with their non-Konecranes equipment. The terminal had 11 Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and 12 Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes fitted with detectors, alarms and fire suppressant aerosols for a fully automatic and autonomously activating system. With installation inside the crane’s e-room and gensets, it easily limits the spread of fire to other parts of the crane.
The goal with every retrofit is to make the handling, functionality, reliability and safety of existing cranes equivalent to the latest generation of Konecranes equipment. Even on equipment that was not originally manufactured by Konecranes, a retrofit adds technology to improve operational efficiency and is a cost-effective way to bring its performance and safety up to the same level as current Konecranes models.

The Konecranes fire suppression retrofit divides the crane into a number of protected areas to prevent fire from spreading. Each area has its own control panel to test, program and control alarms and extinguishers. Smoke- and heat-detecting sensors set off siren and visual alarms in the most visible areas of the crane, and immediately shut down crane functions. The sensors also trigger aerosols that emit a cloud of fire suppressant which is not harmful to humans or animals.
