Konecranes supplies RTG cranes to Brazil and Spain

Corporate press releases

Konecranes has in February 2008 received two orders for RTG cranes from Spanish operator Terminal de Contenidors de Barcelona, S.L. (TCB Group). The orders are for seven RTGs, of which four will be delivered to TCB Group's terminal TCP in Paranagua in Brazil and three to TCB Group's terminal TCV in Valencia in Spain. The cranes will be delivered at the end of 2008. The value of the orders is not disclosed.

With the continuous increase in container traffic, TCB Group is acquiring additional container handling equipment for its terminals. TCB Group is an old customer of Konecranes, which supplied its first cranes to the company in 1993. Today TCB Group has several types of Konecranes cranes in their terminals.

The RTGs ordered are new generation RTGs, which have been designed to take account of future environmental requirements. Thanks to a special fuel saving system they can save up to 30 % in fuel consumption. They have a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes and can stack one over five containers high and six plus truck lane wide.

“We chose Konecranes RTGs because of their great performance, high availability, and low operating and maintenance costs. Also our crane drivers like them very much, thanks to the good driving sensation and accurate control given by the 16-wheel configuration and the Active Load Control system. We think this is the best choice for us,” says Sergio Osete, Project Manager, TCB Group.

Global container terminal operators, like TCB Group, are a very important customer segment for Konecranes,” says Aku Lehtinen, Director, RTG cranes at Konecranes. “Through our global network we can serve them wherever their business expands. The latest orders prove that the customer is satisfied with Konecranes equipment.”

In February 2008, Konecranes received an order for one ship-to-shore (STS) crane from Finnish container terminal operator Steveco. The crane will be delivered to Steveco's container terminal in Vuosaari in Finland during spring 2009. The recently ordered STS crane is similar to the one ordered by Steveco in July 2007, which will be delivered to Steveco's terminal in Vuosaari in summer 2008. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order.

Steveco is a long-standing customer of Konecranes; the company has several types of Konecranes cranes at its container terminal in Mussalo. Steveco will open its new container terminal in Vuosaari in November 2008 for traffic. Steveco is expecting fast growth in container traffic in the Vuosaari port and is therefore investing in additional equipment. The Konecranes STS cranes will be an essential part of terminal operations.

We are very pleased with this order, says Juha Aatola, Director of STS Cranes at Konecranes. This further strengthens our position as a leading supplier of STS cranes in the Baltic Sea area.

The recently ordered Panamax STS crane is a BoxHunter crane that enables fast and precise positioning of containers and ensures efficient operations. It has a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes and an outreach of 39 meters. The crane design allows containers to be stored under the crane.

2007-10-17 10:00:00 en en 0 422 Konecranes wins over EUR 20 million orders from South Korean Shipyards

Konecranes received orders totaling over EUR 20 million from four South Korean shipyards in September 2007. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. Ltd, Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd, Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd and Daehan Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. ordered the design, project supervision and components for eight Goliath gantry cranes. Deliveries are scheduled for spring 2008.

Shipyards are increasing their investments in new and existing facilities in order to cope with higher construction volumes, and to improve throughput times. Shipyards also require bigger cranes to handle ever larger ship blocks. The largest of the cranes ordered has a lifting capacity of 1500 tonnes. The orders include crane design, project supervision and key components such as gears and electrical motors.

Konecranes' single girder gantry cranes are attractive to shipyards due to their light weight combined with excellent stiffness, says Veikko Miettinen, Sales Manager of Shipyard Cranes.

All four shipyards already use Konecranes' Goliath gantry cranes and are very satisfied with the performance of Konecranes' products and services.

The rail span of a Goliath gantry crane can be up to 216 meters and the lifting height up to 98 meters, the crane itself can be over 100 meters high.

2007-09-26 08:59:00 en en 0 425 Breakthrough for Konecranes straddle carriers in Germany

Konecranes has in August received a major order from German container terminal and logistics company Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg GmbH. The order comprises ten straddle carriers for container handling and a service agreement for the warranty period. The straddle carriers will be delivered in February 2008. The total value of the order is not public, but typically the price of similar cranes is in the range of EUR 650,000-850,000.

Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg GmbH is part of Eurogate Group, the largest terminal operator in Europe. The company is making investments in two of its nine terminals, the Bremerhaven terminal and the Hamburg terminal. The ordered equipment will be delivered to the terminal in Hamburg and will partly replace old equipment and partly increase terminal capacity in response to increased demand. Eurogate chose Konecranes straddle carriers as they incorporate the latest technology and because of the good service offering.

This order is strategically important for us, says Helmut Hemesath, Director at Konecranes. This is Konecranes' first crane delivery to Eurogate, which is one of the biggest customers for straddle carriers with almost 300 units in its fleet. The order is a significant reference for us and a major step in the straddle carrier market.

The straddle carriers ordered represent the latest technology on the market, including new steering and brake systems developed by Konecranes. The cranes have a lifting capacity of 50 tonnes and can stack containers 1 over 3 high. They will be used for moving and stacking containers in the container yard.

2007-08-23 10:37:00 en en 0 428 Konecranes acquires ports service business in Italy

Konecranes has on 31 July signed an agreement to acquire the ports service business of Italian service company Technical Services S.R.L. The acquired operations specialize in providing maintenance and engineering services to port terminals, shipyards, shipping companies and related equipment manufacturers.

Technical Services was founded in 1998 and is based in Vado Ligure, close to Genoa in north-western Italy. Total sales of the company was in 2006 EUR 1.8 million. The two previous owners of the company and a workforce of 20 service professionals join the Konecranes organization in Italy. Technical Services and Konecranes Italy have been cooperating for a number of years and this agreement is a natural continuation of this relationship.

This addition to the existing Konecranes service network further strengthens our position in Italy and the Mediterranean area, says Trygve Boström, Director, Ports Service at Konecranes. Italy has a high and fast-growing container throughput and Konecranes now adds one more base to support port equipment sales and serve customers in the Mediterranean area.

Konecranes Ports Service's main customers are harbors, terminals and shipyards. With 20 dedicated service offices in more than 10 countries, Konecranes Ports Service is part of the company's global Service network serving customers worldwide. The product range covers servicing most types of port equipment, from terminal tractors and lifttrucks to big gantry cranes for ports and shipyards, including equipment made by Konecranes and other makes.

2007-08-15 14:30:00 en en 0 429 Konecranes acquires Finnish container handling software specialist

Konecranes signed on 31 July 2007 an agreement to acquire Finnish-based container handling software specialist Savcor One Oy. The company, which is part of Savcor Group, is based in Vantaa and provides its products and services to more than 20 leading container ports all over the world.

Savcor One's software has been part of Konecranes' product offering in recent years and today Konecranes has over 100 Savcor One solutions installed in its fleet. Sales have increased and in order to further develop and integrate the automation technology into Konecranes equipment, it has now become essential to have the automation knowhow in-house. Major customers require integrated systems and turnkey delivery of equipment.

Savcor One container handling software improves the efficiency of terminal operators through maximizing equipment performance in harbours. The software ensures that the container yard inventory is 100 % accurate, by monitoring and measuring the productivity and efficiency of activities. It also tells where to locate or pick up a container, so it eliminates lost containers and the high related costs. In addition, the software offers a step-by-step concept for automating the yard, as it can auto-steer vehicles in the port.

This technology is the link between the different port vehicles such as RTGs, straddle carriers and lift trucks, says Jarmo Juntunen, Director, Ports at Konecranes. This acquisition enables Konecranes to offer complete solutions to its customers. It also gives access to the modernization market both on Konecranes' own equipment and for other makes in the yard. In addition, Konecranes will be able to offer DGPS-based automation systems for the existing equipment of customers and therefore generate new business.

For the business of Savcor One, for our customers and our employees, the acquisition will offer enhanced opportunities as part of Konecranes' total service offering and global network, says Mikko Sampo, Managing Director at Savcor One.

2007-08-01 08:10:00 en en 0 430 Konecranes acquires two machine tool service companies in Scandinavia

Konecranes is strengthening its position in the machine tool service (MTS) business by acquiring two MTS companies in Scandinavia, one in Norway and one in Sweden. The agreements were signed in July 2007.

One of the acquired companies is Kongsberg Automation AS, a Norwegian machine tool maintenance and modernization company headquartered in Kongsberg, southwest of Oslo. Kongsberg Automation employs 32 persons and has net sales of approximately EUR 5 million. The company is specialized in preventive maintenance and modernization of computerized numerical control (CNC) machine tools, with special competence in control systems.

The acquired company will form the first Konecranes MTS unit in Norway and will work closely with Konecranes' crane service units in the country. Synergies in administration, branch structure and product offerings will be utilized.

The second company is the Swedish machine tool maintenance and modernization company Reftele Maskinservice AB, headquartered in Reftele in southern Sweden. A major part of Reftele Maskinservice's business is field service - they specialize in serving eccentric presses - and the rest is modernization and spare parts manufacturing. Reftele Maskinservice has 10 employees and net sales of EUR approximately 1.2 million.

The acquisition of Reftele Maskinservice will enable Konecranes to strengthen and widen its service offerings and competence for press machines in Sweden. Konecranes will form a new MTS unit in Sweden consisting of Reftele Maskinservice and Sajo Service AB, which was acquired by Konecranes in 2005.

We are very pleased to add Kongsberg Automation and Reftele Maskinservice to the Konecranes organization, says Pekka Kujala, Director, Konecranes Service, MTS. The knowledge and experience in machine tool maintenance that the companies bring to Konecranes, further broadens our comprehensive machine tool service offering and expertise.

2007-07-31 09:00:00 en en 0 431 Breakthrough for Konecranes RMG cranes in intermodal terminals - major order to the U.S. BNSF Railway, the largest intermodal freight operator in the world, is the first American intermodal operator to order wide span, high-performance Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes from Konecranes. Thirteen RMG container-handling cranes will be delivered to BNSF's Memphis and Kansas City intermodal terminals. The parties have agreed not to disclose the total value and other details of the order, which was made in June.

BNSF, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is investing to expand the capacity of its railway network and intermodal facilities due to rapidly increasing container volumes. Intermodal transportation involves more than one mode of transportation (e.g. rail and truck). BNSF's current cranes will be replaced by new, much larger and more efficient ones. The recently ordered RMG cranes will take container-handling efficiency to a new level and set a benchmark for future intermodal terminal development in North America.

BNSF selected Konecranes for this order based on the total value they will deliver: global expertise, high quality equipment, and robust after-sales service, says Fritz Draper, BNSF Vice President - Business Unit Operations. BNSF's investment in these large cranes shows our commitment to continuously improving our operations for the ultimate benefit of our customers.

The BNSF order marks an important breakthrough for Konecranes RMGs in the U.S. intermodal market. The RMG cranes share the proven and highly-appreciated load handling features of Konecranes Rubber Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, says Veikko Nieminen, Director, RMG cranes.

The ordered RMG cranes are all-electric and will thus have a very low environmental impact. They are also equipped with Regenerative Network Braking units that enable energy, released during lowering the load or during braking, to be fed back to the local grid, instead of being wasted in braking resistors. This means remarkable savings in energy costs. The RMGs span 42.6 meters and can lift 40-ton containers one-over-five high. They will be used for the transfer of containers between stack, rail cars and road vehicles.

2007-07-26 14:50:00 en en 0 432 Konecranes strengthens its position in growing African markets

Konecranes has in June 2007 signed an agreement to acquire 19% of the share capital in the crane manufacturing company Dynamic Crane Systems Ltd (DCS) in South Africa. DCS has annual net sales of approximately EUR 4 million and 60 employees. The agreement includes an option to acquire the remaining shares in the company at a later stage.

DCS is a leading crane manufacturing company in South Africa, specializing in the manufacture, servicing and assembly of industrial and process cranes. DCS and Konecranes have worked together since the early 1990s, as DCS has been a licensee of Konecranes products for the South African market.

Business is growing strongly in South Africa and this strategic acquisition will enable Konecranes to deepen its cooperation with existing customers and continue to expand the customer base in southern Africa, says Kari Utriainen, Director, Konecranes Standard Lifting. The sub-Saharan market has been untapped by Konecranes and this acquisition will also support our expansion efforts in this vast region.

DCS headquarters are in Johannesburg and it has a sales and service office in Natal. The main industrial customer segments for DCS are automotive, petrochemical, power, steel, paper and ports. An interesting and important growth area for us is the mining industry, and DCS gives us an entry into that market, Utriainen continues.

Closer cooperation with Konecranes gives us more leverage within the industry and supports our aim of becoming the largest crane company in South Africa in the coming years, says Trevor Atkinson, co-founder of DCS. The overall market is expected to grow and infrastructure will improve during the next three years because of the FIFA Football World Cup that will be held in the country in 2010.

2007-06-20 09:20:00 en en 0 433 Konecranes strengthens its position in Russia- repeat orders for over 20 MEUR

During the second quarter of 2007 Konecranes has received two repeat orders from Russia: one for port cranes and one for process cranes. Konecranes operations in Russia have been expanding in recent years and these orders further strengthen Konecranes' position in the country. The total value of the orders is more than EUR 20 Million.

The port crane order was received from the container terminal company ZAO First Container Terminal (FCT). The order is for two Panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) container cranes which will be delivered in the summer of 2008. Konecranes received an order for similar cranes from FCT last year.

During the last few years, FCT, which is based in St.Petersburg, has experienced substantial growth in container traffic. The recently ordered STS cranes will increase container handling capacity at the terminal by offering efficient loading and unloading of Panamax-sized vessels. The STS cranes have a lifting capacity of 50 tons, outreach of 38 meters and are equipped with Konecranes AC electrical control system.

The order also includes a two-year preventive maintenance contract for the cranes. The preventive service and technical support will be provided by ZAO Konecranes Russia, which is the leading port service provider in Russia and is active in all fields of service.

The second order was placed by the Turkish construction company, and Konecranes' long-term partner, Gama Endustri Tesisleri Imalat ve Montaj AS, the end customer is the Russian steel mill PNTZ in Pervorouralsky. This order includes several types of process cranes with related equipment, such as three ladle cranes and four scrap loading cranes. The different types of cranes and equipment will be used in the steel melting process for producing round billets. Deliveries will begin in December 2007 and will continue through April 2008. PNTZ has specialized in seamless pipes and is now widening their offering to include billets.

Last year was a good year for Konecranes in Russia with significant orders from FCT, PetroLesPort and Multilink Terminals. This year seems to become equally successful. Our broad product offering, diverse customers and high-quality service form a strong base for continued growth in the Russian market, says Fedor Elagin, General Director, ZAO Konecranes Russia.

2007-03-30 10:30:00 en en 0 437 Konecranes Reach Stackers to Ports in Africa

Konecranes received three significant orders for reach stackers
from returning customers in December 2006. Six units will be supplied to the Namibian Port Authorities, Namibia, three to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Kenya and four to Meridian Ports Services Limited (MPS), Ghana. The total value of the three orders is approximately 5.5 MEUR. The equipment will be delivered by Spring 2007.

Commenting on the orders, Niklas G. Persson, Sales Director, Konecranes Lifttrucks says: The success of our reach stacker builds upon many years of development work and close customer relationships. Over the past ten years we have delivered over 200 fork lift trucks, container lift trucks and reach stackers to Africa and the recent orders further demonstrate our long-term commitment in customers on this continent.

Namibia is positioned to become a significant hub with trade corridors to other Southern African countries. The agreement between Namibian Port Authorities and Konecranes, includes six reach stackers with a maximum lifting capacity of 45 tons. The equipment is capable of stacking containers five high and will increase the container handling capacity at the port in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The port authority, which operates two similar Konecranes reach stackers since March 2006, returned to Konecranes due to the company's high-performance equipment and strong service capabilities.

Mombasa port is destined to become an important transport gateway in Eastern Africa. Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is implementing a major investment program and has ordered three Konecranes reach stackers, of which two will be delivered to the Nairobi port and one to the Mombasa port. KPA already operates eight Konecranes fork lift trucks, with a lifting capacity from 10 to 25 tons.

Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS), a returning customer to Konecranes has ordered four reach stackers for the new terminal in Tema, Ghana. MPS already operates eight similar reach stackers and four empty container handlers from Konecranes. The decisive factor for winning this repeat order was the customer's satisfaction of previous Konecranes deliveries and local service support. The units are rated for 45 tons and are capable of stacking containers five high.

2007-02-13 11:00:00 en en 0 438 Large Repeat Order From Turkish Steel Mill

Icdas Istanbul Celik Enerji Tersane ve Ulasim Sanayi A.S. (ICDAS), a significant Turkish steel producer, has ordered nine steel mill cranes and one crane upgrade from Konecranes. The order was made in December 2006 and the cranes will be delivered to the ICDAS steel mill in Canakkale, Turkey between November 2007 and February 2008. The total value of the order is over 9 MEUR.

Turkey is today among the twelve biggest steel-producing countries in the world and Konecranes aims to capitalize on its strong position in the fast growing Turkish steel industry. This recent order is part of ICDAS' investment project to increase the manufacturing capacity of flat steel products at their second steel melting plant in Canakkale, located at their North Eastern coast of the Marmara Sea.

The order includes one ladle crane, one charging crane, one tundish crane, four scrapyard cranes, two billet cranes with a slewing trolley, and one upgrade of a charging crane from 200 tons to 250 tons.

We delivered one 300-ton ladle crane and one 200-ton charging crane to ICDAS' first steel melting shop in 2003. Our long-term cooperation and ICDAS' good experience of operating similar products from Konecranes were key factors for winning this repeat order, says Kari Wallgren, Director, Process Cranes.

In 2006, Konecranes delivered a large number of steel mill cranes, including two ladle cranes and two charging cranes, with a 500-ton lifting capacity to the Turkish steel manufacturer Colakoglu Metalurji.

2007-02-07 09:30:00 en en 0 439 Konecranes Enters Straddle Carrier Business and Expands Product Portfolio

Konecranes' entry into the Straddle Carrier business is an important step in developing Konecranes' product offering within Ports and further increases the company's global competitiveness. The Straddle Carrier is used for container stacking, transport of containers from the Ship-to-Shore crane to the yard and for the loading and unloading of trucks. Konecranes will use its well-established global service platform to support the new product line.

Konecranes will start to manufacture Straddle Carriers based on the concept developed by Consens Transport Systeme GmbH, who was the original provider of this equipment. Konecranes has acquired all the existing product rights from Consens.

The market size of the Straddle Carrier is more than 500 units per year. The Straddle Carrier supplements Konecranes' product range of Ship-to-Shore cranes, Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes, Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes, Lifttrucks and Reachstackers, and opens a strategic position to access the opportunities in the Straddle Carriers market. Konecranes will utilize its existing distribution and service network for cranes and lifttrucks to market the new product line.

The core team of experts from Consens Transport Systeme GmbH will join Konecranes, under the direction of Mr. Jyrki Melaanvuo, Director, Yard Cranes. The entry combines Konecranes' intelligent lifting solutions with Consens' knowledge of Straddle Carriers.

The Konecranes Straddle Carrier is designed to maintain a shock-free lifting of 60 tons, and has a true twin twenty lifting capability, and therefore increases the productivity. This machine also features state-of-the-art driving characteristics, says Mr. Melaanvuo.

By entering the straddle carrier business, Konecranes not only widens the product offering, but also gains access to new customers, who have been using this yard operating concept.
