How did crane operators make precise load movements before the days of inverter drives? The answer, unfortunately, was “jogging,” where operators repeatedly tapped the controls of the crane to move in small increments. This slowed the crane down enough to carefully place a load, but the jerky motions also caused damage to the bridge, trolley and hoist. The Konecranes Inching Smart Feature allows operators to make movements in small increments for precise load placement. This feature is especially useful when very accurate load placement is required for fragile or delicate loads. It can also be beneficial when accurate, tight movements are needed to avoid obstructions.
The crane operator first moves the crane near the load destination and then turns on the Inching feature with the selector switch on the crane's radio controller. When joystick movement is activated, the load will move only the predefined distance. If the joystick is released during the inching movement, the load immediately stops. Inching can be activated for both hoisting and traveling motions in increments ranging from 5 to 100mm. Separate inching distances can be programmed for different motions.
